When did we all become 3 year olds and decide that we had to resort to social media threats to talk about our personal political opinions?
Facebook becomes less and less cool each time I refresh my newsfeed to see another news article someone has shared with one of these captions:
“Go ahead and un-friend me if you don’t think *THIS!* “
“Please, do me the favor of un-friending me if-“
“We can no longer be Facebook friends if you still think *BLANK* after watching *THIS*”
So let me get this straight: a once friendly social media platform designed to reconnect people is now a preferred method of tossing out empty threats to people, somehow to convince them that your political opinions are so important to you that you can longer stand to see Becky from math class on your friends list if she doesn’t want to come aboard your political party bandwagon?
Let’s face it. Not everyone wants to change. Not everyone will.
I’d personally prefer to have a diverse group of friends. There is a difference between expressing your own opinions, having a healthy *un-emotional* debate about those opinions, and looking like a controlling idiot. Because, really?
As we happen to live in a country called the United States, which is largely founded upon freedom of speech, we have to share this country with about 300 million people. Are you going to threaten all of them to leave if they don’t agree with you? Is Facebook just your utopia micro-environment for controlling every person on your profile population?
Maybe you are just frustrated and angry about certain issues. That is fine, and that is normal. Feel free to express your opinion however emotional and passionate. But take a step back:
Who is going to RESPECT a person threatening to BAN everyone who doesn’t agree with their latest post from their exclusive list of Facebook friends?
And aren’t you grabbing the attention of a wider audience anyway, if you let them sit on your list of friends and soak up your other opinions? What I’m really asking is, what is your goal here?
Please, think twice before posting that heated status. It makes me think you’re a little off your rocker.
